The room where we relax is also where we tend to add most to our energy bill. The good news is that it's easy to cut out waste on light, heat, TV and DVD equipment usage by following the steps below.
- Unplug or switch off the TV or sound system when you are not using them - they use energy even in "stand-by" mode.
- Switch off or turn heater controls down when the room is warm enough, or use thermostatic radiator valves (TRV) to keep the room at a constant and comfortable temperature. These are particularly effective if you also have heat coming from an open fire in the room.
- Use occasional electric heaters fitted with thermostatic controls for comfortably, energy-efficient heating.
- Keep the curtains closed at night and make sure you don't just heat the space between the curtains and the window. A radiator shelf can also deflect the convection currents past the curtains into the room.
- Light the living room efficiently using compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) or dimmer switches in the area you are using rather than lighting up the whole room unnecessarily.
